A video clip of "New Scientist" shows that a dog's vertebrae regain their ability to walk after being treated in severe injury. Italian neuroscientist Sergio Canavero said that the technology to treat the dog is expected to make human head transplants feasible next year.
Canavero became famous in 2015, and he claims that the main obstacle to completing a head transplant has now been overcome. The idea is that if someone is paralyzed below the neck, then there is hope that their head will be connected to the body of another person who died, thus restoring their mobility.
In a series of three articles published in the September 21 issue of the International Journal of Surgical Neurology, edited by Canavero, researchers from South Korea and the United States said that one is called polyethylene glycol (or PEG). Chemicals may help reconnect the severely damaged spine.
The C-Yoon Kim team at Jianguo University in Seoul severely damaged the spine of 16 mice. Four weeks later, they reported that five mice in the PEG group regained mobility and the other three eventually died as mice in the control group.
